epic day of service
For the second year, we partnered with the Broomfield Crossing and Westminster Rotary clubs to participate in the annual EPIC Day of Service. The EPIC Day of Service was created to unite more than 2,500 Rotary clubs and 75,000 Rotarians, community volunteers, and partners across the globe in a single day dedicated to making the world a better place. Redd Upton led the charge and identified the projects in, and around, Bal Swan. These projects included painting parking lines, painting murals and shapes on the playground, cleaning out gutters, spreading mulch in the play areas, and much more! For their efforts, volunteers were treated to Travelin' Tom's Coffee and a lunch provided by iPie.
 
 THANK YOU to all the volunteers, and specifically Redd Upton for spearheading this effort. A write-up of their efforts also appeared in the Broomfield Enterprise. 
 

Announcements:

  • Charity - our student in Uganda
    • Dave Ellen thanked the club for their response to his plea for computer donations a couple of weeks ago. Both Kymberly Groom and William Sheridan have donated laptops that will be shipped together with cellphones donated by Dave Ellen. Our engineering student, Charity, will now be equipped for the new school year! 
  • Bingo
    • PP Ben announced that he is leading a bingo effort with SRB next Friday from 2-4pm in the Lakeshore room at the Broomfield Community Center. He is in need of volunteers to help with the effort. Please contact PP Ben if you are able to help. 
  • Memorial Day
    • PP Gary Francis reminded the club of the Memorial Day picnic at the Broomfield Commons this coming Monday. The event will start at 11am, and depending on weather, might include a flyover!
  • Police & Fire golf tournament
    • Kymberly Groom announced that the Police and Fire golf tournament will be on Monday July 7. The website for donations and sponsorships is also live and can be found via the club's homepage. Please spread the word to your contacts to buy sponsorships and/or tickets to the golf ball drop. 
  • End-of-Year donations

    • If you would like to "move up" in Paul Harris levels, the club is running a points-match. For each $500 donation to the Rotary International Foundation, the club will match your donation with 500 points, moving you to the next Paul Harris level. 

  • Speaker
    • Our speaker was Maura Nelson, Regent of the Front Range chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She gave an overview of the historical origins of the organization and how it helped to deploy more than 1,000 nurses during WWI. After WWI, DAR sold lapel pins for one penny to help with re-chickenizing (it's a real word!) in France. Since then, DAR has been instrumental in helping immigrants learn English, helping with reforestation efforts, and even dedicated a "Madonna of the Trail" monument in Lamar, Colorado, to commemorate the spirit of pioneer women in the United States.
